What's in a cog?

  1. Chat avatar - Establishes the mode of learning – a simulated chat with a coach.
  2. Prompt - Cognician uses a variety of prompt types, with which the virtual coach can engage the learner. Open-ended thought-provoking questions, multiple choice questions, likert scales, among others, mean that instructional designers can vary the learning experience considerably.
  3. User’s response field - The response field ensures that we elicit “self-explanations” which keeps the mind of the user actively engaged. Research shows that learning experiences involving self-explanations can yield learning gains up to two standard deviations higher than traditional classroom learning gains.
  4. Sessions - Learners can access their worksheets on any device at any time. The same cog can be used many times, creating multiple worksheets. And learners can share their worksheets with colleagues and instructors.
  5. Sidebar - Rich media, case studies and engaging stories are shared in the sidebar.
  6. Follow-through (not pictured) - Inspired by new ideas, learners can commit to new actions and be reminded to follow through on predetermined dates by email.
  7. Insights (not pictured) - Insights are thoughts that learners share with the group, outside of their private chat space. Colleagues can comment on insights and start new conversations that enable social learning.

What about admin?

  1. Insights - Group administrators have a birds eye view of all insights shared by all participants across entire programs.
  2. Active users - A page that displays a detailed view of individual user engagement that shows first and last active dates, worksheets, and insights, and allows group administrators to tag learners.
  3. Inactive users
  4. Messaging - Enables direct email messaging of sub-groups of users.
  5. Join requests - Allows administrators to approve join requests.
  6. Key indicators - A high level view of engagement.
  7. Visualised data - A 30-day view of activity, which can be customised to show specific client data.
